Chipping Basics

Today I thought I'd share a little bit about chipping. Chipping is a a short, low shot around the green. If you can chip the ball a little closer, you have a better chance of making the putt and avoid three-putting. Here comes a few bullet points:

Pre-swing

  • Grip the club lower on the handle so you have more control

  • Weight is distributed so you have 60-70% on your lead leg.

  • Shaft leans slightly forward.

  • Ball position is middle of your feet.

  • Your head, sternum and belly button are in line and over the ball.

If you have a tendency to hit behind the ball, check that your head & sternum are over the ball and not set behind like the photo on the right.

In-swing

  • The motion is almost like a putt with passive wrists. Your lead shoulder go down at the start of the motion.

  • The size of the swing is knee-high to knee-high.

  • Your finish position should have the club close to the ground.

  • Tempo is even with a slight acceleration.

Also, make sure your arms are still stretched out. Your lead hip should also open up here in the finish and you should feel most of your weight on your lead foot.

A lot of students tell me this shot feels a bit "stiff" at first! After a while, you will be able to soften a little more. Please reach out if you have questions! I'd be happy to troubleshoot with you!

Keep swingin',
